About the Position:

The Academic Advising Center is the home for Undergraduate General Education Advising and for undeclared students. Our mission is to work in a collaborative partnership with students, a shared responsibility, where the advisor and student are equally invested in the educational process and holistic development of the student. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Advisor (Student Services Professional II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the direction of the College Associate Dean and the Director of Academic Advising, Training & Professional Development, the College Advisor provides holistic and proactive advising to undergraduate students in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM). Develops and implements campaigns designed to increase retention, reduce equity gaps, and facilitate progress toward the degree. Using basic interviewing and counseling techniques, delivers effective and compassionate assistance to NSM students on academic notice or experiencing other academic and personal challenges. Accesses and maintains a student tracking database and utilizes campus advising and data analytic tools to support advising and outreach efforts. Reports on students supported, challenges experienced, and overall outcomes. Other duties as assigned.

Essential Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field. A masters degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience. Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational management, research, and interview techniques. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews, and advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to reason logically and use initiative in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.

CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
