Job Description:
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Counselor will serve under the direction of the Executive Dean of the Lake County Campus or designee at Woodland Community College. The assignment includes day and evening counseling hours and traveling within the service area as needed. Responsibilities may include workshops and/or other Student Services assignments.

The responsibilities are as follows:
Provide academic, transfer, career, and personal counseling to a diverse general student population.

Assist in the development and provision of follow-up services for continuing students, including workshops, one-on-one academic advising sessions, and classroom presentations.

Assist in the development and provision of services for students on academic probation or dismissed students, including, but not limited to workshops and one-on-one academic advising.

Administer and interpret inventories and tests of aptitude, career or college major interests, values and personality to assist students in determining career and educational goals and developing education plans.

Advise students with making course selections and help them to develop abbreviated and comprehensive education plans using the college's online education planning system.

Assist in the development and provision of a variety of workshops and classroom presentations for students, including but not limited to orientation, transfer, probation, wellness, and student success topics.

Keep abreast of current information on district and college academic requirements and support services (e.g., financial aid, transfer, degree and graduation requirements, etc.), student success strategies.

Assist in the development, implementation, and application of the college's Early Alert system.

Refer students to appropriate on-campus academic and student support services (e.g., EOP&S, DSP&S, CalWORKs, Financial Aid, Student Success Center) and off-campus community resources.

Assist in the compilation and documentation needed to report data regarding counseling services provided to students.

Keep abreast of the latest information and requirements of CSU and UC systems, and private and out-of-state institutions, to provide accurate and timely transfer information to students.

Assist with the development of delivery systems using technology for alternative and expanded student services, including but not limited to online advising.

Develop counseling curriculum and participate in the development and assessment of Student Learning Outcomes/Service Area Outcomes.

Teach counseling classes as assigned.

Assist with training of program staff and student employees on issues related to counseling.

Assist in developing programs and services that will improve student access to college, and increase student retention and completion rates.

Serve as a consultant to instructional faculty, staff, and administrators regarding student transfer to four-year colleges and universities, including transfer planning and preparation, requirements, processes, and timelines.

Work collaboratively and in coordination with instructional faculty, staff, and administrators in the development of student success initiatives and provision of counseling services in support of Guided Pathways and other programs, including but not limited to MESA, First Year Experience and Summer Bridge.

Confer with and advise faculty regarding matters of administrative procedure in such areas as admissions and records, articulation and course equivalency, and communication with other colleges and universities.

Assist with Program Reviews, annual updates, and Evaluations.

Serve on College committees, attend faculty meetings, and work collaboratively with staff and faculty at the college's three locations: Woodland, Colusa, and Lake.

Ability to work varied day, evening and weekend hours as needed to meet student and institutional needs for the provision of counseling services.

Complete all duties as assigned by the Vice President Student and Academic Services and Executive Dean.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION: Selected person must maintain a flexible work schedule, which allows for evening, weekend and off-campus assignments and be enthusiastically capable of adapting to the the college’s focus on increasing student success and corresponding changes in service delivery.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate, by the final filing date, must possess the minimum qualifications for instructors in Counseling at California Community Colleges:

  • Master’s Degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent.
    •(Note: A bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
  • Possess a California Community College life credential in the subject matter area of Counseling.

    Desired/Preferred Qualifications:
    •Bilingual – Spanish preferred
    •Two years of experience working with disadvantaged students, minority students, and students with disabilities.
    •One year of administering assessment instruments and diagnostic skills preferred. 
    •Demonstrated organizational skills
    •Ability to communicate well with a wide range of people, both oral and written required.

Physical Demands:


Salary Range: $62,936.05 - $96,617.66/year. - Initial placement will not be higher than the above listed salary, the top step for this position is Class VI, Step 19 which is $137,855.99 /YR.)

BENEFITS/SALARY: The District offers a comprehensive benefits package for employees and dependent, valued at over $20,000 annually with a $310.50 monthly out of pocket expense to employees or dependents for monthly premiums. The package includes health, dental, vision, two (2) life insurance policies and an Employee Assistance program. Additional benefits include contributions to the State Teacher’s Retirement System (STRS), 457/403b options, 10 sick days and a 202 day contract. INITIAL PLACEMENT WILL NOT BE HIGHER THAN CLASS 6, STEP 10, ACCORDING TO THE ACADEMIC HANDBOOK.
